During my time in the Fashion Marketing and Management program, I had the chance to explore upcycling, a creative challenge that taught me how to transform pre-loved items into stylish, functional pieces. For one assignment, I visited Goodwill to select two different items and combine them into a unique, upscale clothing piece. I chose a pair of jeans and, using leftover fabric from the project, crafted a purse, giving both items new life while embracing sustainable fashion practices.
Another exciting project involved designing clothing for Barbie dolls, where I was given two dolls and the brand Calvin Klein. My task was to create stylish, brand-appropriate outfits using a range of textiles. I explored how to incorporate the signature Calvin Klein aesthetic while adapting it to the small scale of Barbie dolls. This hands-on project deepened my understanding of textile use and how to translate a brand’s identity into wearable designs, even on a miniature scale.
Both experiences allowed me to enhance my creativity, problem-solving skills, and sustainability knowledge, which are key in today’s fashion industry. They also helped me appreciate the importance of reimagining materials and making fashion more sustainable.
